Coach George Bates is recognized throughout Metro Birmingham as a leading program architect, consistently transforming teams into postseason contenders.
The Center Point Era (2018–2024)
Prior to his current position, Coach Bates dedicated seven seasons to rejuvenating the Center Point High School football program, establishing it as a model of sustained excellence.
- Performance Record: Achieved a 52-30 overall record and excelled in regional competition with a 33-13 mark.
- Postseason Consistency: Guided the Eagles to seven consecutive playoff appearances, ensuring postseason participation throughout his tenure.
- Playoff Advancement: Led the program to the Class 5A State Quarterfinals in both 2019 and 2021.
- Classification Adaptability: Directed the program through several AHSAA classification changes, sustaining a winning culture in both Class 5A and Class 6A.
Building the Future at Shades Valley High School (2025–Present)
Coach Bates assumed leadership of the Shades Valley program prior to the 2025 season, undertaking the challenge of restructuring a younger, developing roster within one of the state's most competitive regions (Class 6A, Region 6).
- Building a Competitive Culture: Emphasizes daily competition, mental preparedness, and peer guidance to support the development of a young team.
- Establishing the Foundation: Oversees a developmental year focused on building structural discipline, physical resilience, and the execution necessary for competition at the 6A level.
- Player Development: Utilizes extensive experience in Metro Birmingham football to accelerate the development of underclassmen and establish the depth essential for sustained stability and postseason success.
